African Gold Takes Center at Russia–Africa Summit as Moscow Expands Exploration and Offers Diamond-Cutting Expertise

Gold mineralization identified at three sites in Zimbabwe, while geological surveys in Mali, Benin, and the Central African Republic could uncover new mineral resources.

Gold and diamonds were among the economic issues discussed at the Third Russia–Africa Summit, held in Moscow on October 28–29, 2026.

Russia outlined the expansion of its geological exploration activities across several African countries and announced the identification of new indications of gold mineralization during diamond exploration in Zimbabwe. Moscow also expressed its readiness to share expertise in diamond mining, cutting and polishing, as well as the manufacture of jewelry and other products using precious metals and gemstones.

During a session titled “From Extraction to Prosperity: Mineral Resources as the Foundation of People’s Well-Being,” Russian Minister of Natural Resources Alexander Kozlov revealed that Russia had concluded 21 cooperation agreements with 14 African countries, including 15 documents related to geology.

These partnerships form part of a broader strategy to expand geological surveying, mineral exploration, and the development of mineral resource databases.

Gold Identified During Diamond Exploration in Zimbabwe

Among the most significant developments announced by the Russian minister was the identification of gold mineralization at three of the 13 sites where a joint Russian-Zimbabwean company is conducting diamond exploration.

Kozlov explained that the company had obtained the rights to undertake gold-related operations at these locations and was currently assessing the resources and the potential for moving toward pilot mining.

The findings do not yet establish economically recoverable gold reserves. However, they could pave the way for expanding the project’s activities to include gold alongside diamonds, depending on the results of further geological studies and technical assessments.

Russia Expands Gold Exploration Across Africa

On the sidelines of the summit, Alexey Desyatkin, Director General of Zarubezhgeologia, the international operations arm of the Russian geological group Rosgeologiya, outlined several ongoing and proposed projects across Africa.

In the Central African Republic, the company began gold exploration activities in June 2026, building on geological studies and mapping conducted in 2021 and 2022.

In Benin, airborne geophysical surveys resumed in the northern regions in October, aiming to identify areas with potential deposits of gold and non-ferrous metals.

In Mali, the Russian company signed two agreements to develop digital geological maps covering more than half of the country’s territory and to establish an information system for managing mineral resources and mining licenses.

These initiatives are intended to improve geological knowledge and identify areas requiring further exploration, rather than indicating that new gold deposits have already been discovered.

Russian-African cooperation in the gold sector has also extended beyond geological exploration.

In June 2025, construction began on a national gold refinery in Mali in partnership with Russia’s Yadran Group. The facility has a planned refining capacity of 200 tonnes of gold annually, with the Malian government holding a 62% stake.

The project aims to develop domestic gold refining capacity and increase local value addition, with the potential to process gold originating from neighboring African countries.

The Russian partner has also announced its intention to meet international Good Delivery accreditation requirements.

The refinery project illustrates how Russian-African cooperation is expanding into mineral processing and refining, alongside the geological surveying and exploration initiatives highlighted during the summit.

Meanwhile, Zarubezhgeologia is preparing potential contracts with Niger for the exploration of solid mineral resources, including gold, in addition to other energy-related projects.

Together, these developments point to growing Russian interest in the early stages of Africa’s mining value chain, from geological surveys and data collection to resource evaluation and the identification of future investment opportunities.

African Diamonds: From Mining to Cutting and Polishing

Precious stones were not discussed solely in the context of exploration.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Anton Siluanov expressed Moscow’s readiness to cooperate with African countries in transferring expertise and technologies related to natural diamond mining, cutting, and polishing, as well as the manufacture of jewelry and other products made from precious metals and gemstones.

His remarks came during a presentation featuring a replica of the Russian Imperial Crown, whose original was created in 1762 for the coronation of Empress Catherine II.

The historic crown, adorned with thousands of diamonds and other precious stones, is regarded as a symbol of Russia’s jewelry-making heritage and craftsmanship.

Russia is also a major player in the global diamond mining industry through ALROSA, one of the world’s leading producers of rough diamonds.

This position makes diamond cutting, polishing, and technology transfer potential areas for strengthening cooperation with African diamond-producing countries.

Could Geological Surveys Reveal New Gold Resources?

Russia’s geological projects in Africa reflect growing interest in expanding knowledge of the continent’s mineral resources, particularly in areas that have not yet undergone sufficiently detailed surveys.

Although geophysical surveys and digital geological mapping do not directly produce gold, they help identify promising geological formations and guide subsequent investment toward locations with greater potential for economically viable deposits.

As these activities expand across Mali, Benin, the Central African Republic, and Niger, they may lead to the identification of additional gold resources and other mineral deposits.

However, any discoveries and estimates of economically recoverable resources will depend on further exploration, drilling, and mineral resource assessments.

These partnerships also raise a broader question: To what extent will future Russian-African cooperation move beyond raw material exploration and extraction toward refining, diamond cutting and polishing, and downstream manufacturing?

Such a transition could enable African producing countries to retain a greater share of the value generated from their mineral resources.
